| "Chief's" 1966 Conversion | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Last spring "Chief" (my father) walked into the shop and said, "I want a new bike". I thought for a second and replied excitedly "We'll build your RS that's collecting dust in the back corner" to which he answered was too tall for him. "OK - how about my /5?" I asked. "No, it's also too tall". "OK -- we’ll restore your R60/2." "No-no, I don't want to have to kick anything". "Chief you're not leaving me many options here" I was starting to get exasperated. Bob, who overheard us going back and forth, pipes up and says, "How about a perversion bike? "A what?!", Chief and I ask in unison. "You know a perversion bike, better known as a "conversion". Bob's always coming up with funny one-liners. Finally, this was the perfect solution to Chief's dilemma. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of the BMW conversion bike. For me, taking a pre 70's BMW and replacing what I think was the best engine ever made (Bob would disagree) with the post 70's powertrain is just wrong. Being a purist and liking things to be original or as close as possible, I just couldn't accept the conversion - it's sacrilegious. Bob began describing the benefits, "Chief, you're vertically challenged (short), you're 68 years old, and how can I say this politely? You’re a bit swollen (plump). The conversion is a, perfect fit for you!" Chief and I listen, as Bob continues, "I'm serious - this is what we will do! We'll source a donor frame - Sean you have lots of /2 spares. I have all the powertrain parts. We'll even put a low Corbin seat and a Wixom fairing on her for you!" Bob turns to Chief with a smirk (Bob hates fairings). With a big, smile on his face, Chief states, "Make it so!" As if he were captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise ~ |

| Frame with papers is found and after being completely media blasted it headed into our paint shop. This is a shot of it off-gasing in the booth. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Here we have installed the freshly build R75 engine. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The top end goes on. We painted the cyclinders black to look more like the painted cast iron cylinder of a /2. We upgraded the cylinders with 800cc high compression pistons. This will give her a little more get-up-and-go! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Rocker Arm assemblies from a doner R100/7 with needle bearings replaced the original /5's which used bushings. This will quiet down the top end - a lot. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Completely rebuilt rearend gets installed. We used a spacer plate that allows the /2 driveshaft to connect to a /5 transmission. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| We fabricated a new battery tray which will allow us to use a larger 12v battery. Looks and performs like the original just bigger, but still uses the stock battery strap. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Here's a shot of the Corbin /2 seat. looks great, really only works with large sport tank which we are planning on using. It even has a cut out for the tire pump. A customer loved this seat so much we sold it to her. So currently we are waiting for a replacement which we should have any day now. Customers always come first! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Here we are trying out a few fairing ideas. This is a great little "Police style" windshield. I just finshed painting up a Wixom Ranger fairing which I think Chief will like the added protection in our colder climate. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I welded in some nice mounting posts under the gas tank, to mount the Dyna coil, voltage regulator and starter relay. These aftermarket components are great and the price is right compared to OEM. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| A Nippondenso starter is used for its robust construction and wire-coil fields insuring long service. At 6 lbs., it's approximately half of a Bosch's weight, and draws 80 amps of battery current, compared to the 120 amp draw common to Bosch. We always have these in stock. Eight or nine tooth. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
